SUPER ALIGNMENT – Computator Design

A Design Course for 12d Model
This is the course for you if you are looking to advance your 12d Model Super Alignment design capabilities from the fundamental element design methods through to utilising computators.
Linking various design objects together.

You will learn to:

  • Create element design parts for both horizontal and vertical design.
  • Modify horizontal and vertical elements.
  • Use the “fixed”, “floating” and “free” elements available in the super alignment.
  • Create kerb return strings both horizontally and vertically utilising the design elements.
  • Develop a small roundabout, kerb returns, linemarking and traffic island all of which is linked and can automatically be moved and adjusted as required.


This is an in-depth course in the use of Super Alignments as Control Strings by calculating geometry.

It explores the concepts of Parametric Design, and the techniques for creating and edited Super Alignments using “Fixed”, “Floating” and “Free” elements (Parametric Design).

The Dataset for this training course is found under the Resources Tab above. (If you have completed the 161 course, you can carry on with the same 12d Model project).

A License of 12d Model with the Alignment module is required to complete this course.

At the end of this course there is a mandatory assignment to be completed to be eligible for a training certificate of competency.

Course Content

Topic 1 – Download Data and Open 12d Model Project
Topic 1 Summary. The lesson in Topic 1 is where we download the data for the course and start by creating the intersecting road design both horizontally and vertically.

  • Lesson 1.1 Download Training Data & Open the 12d Model Project
  • Lesson 1.2 Create Road RS2E01 Horizontal Design
  • Lesson 1.3 Create Road RS2E01 Vertical Design

Topic 2 – Create Roundabout Island Design
Topic 2 Summary. The lessons in Topic 2 will cover setting up the Horizontal Alignment design for the roundabout centre island and construction string for travel lanes around the roundabout.

Topic 3 – Create Kerb Return Designs
Topic 3 Summary In Topic 3 we will create the design for the kerb returns around the roundabout.

Topic 4 – Create Drive Strings
Topic 4 Summary In Topic 4 we will get you to create a horizontal design for the drive strings through the roundabout, these strings will setup the location for where the traffic islands will sit in relation to the roundabout and traffic lanes.

Topic 5 – Road RS2B01 Vertical Geometry
Topic 5 Summary In Topic 5 we will cover the vertical design of Road RS2B01, using fixed lines and free parabolas to set up the design of the super alignment. We will also look at the tricks to edit and move the vertical design elements.

Topic 6 – Creating Traffic Islands
Topic 6 Summary In Topic 6 we will be creating the traffic islands around the roundabout.

Topic 7 – Extra Design for the Roundabout
Topic 7 Summary In Topic 7 we will cover the extra super alignment tools available in 12d Model, then we will finish the roundabout design, adding kerb profiles and pavements.
