About Course

Civil Design for Land Development

This course is about Civil Design for a Land Development site using 12d Model. We have chosen a project called “Wattle Park Land Development”.

You will download and open this existing project using a full working copy of 12d Model, and complete the design at your own pace, with video lessons showing design techniques.

The course describes the workflows required to create road design models in a typical land development site. You will learn how to create and modify the Road Design models using the “Apply MTF” function.

Road design in 12d Model uses three design inputs, and the “Apply MTF” function brings these together to create the design.

  • “Survey” – a ‘tin’ or ‘triangulation’ of the existing ground survey.
  • “Templates” these define the shape of your road – the design cross section.
  • “Super Alignment” this is the Centreline or Control String. The ‘Super Alignment’ defines both the horizontal and vertical geometry for the road.

The three components are combined using the “Apply MTF’ Function, and cross sections and strings are created.

The course focuses on the use of the ‘MTF’ file and ‘Apply MTF’ function.
We provide a triangulated survey, a template in created by inputting a pre-defined template file from your working folder, and the Super Alignments with horizontal and vertical geometry that you will use in the course will be created by loading in a 12daz file that contains the data you require.

We describe the setup of the ‘Apply MTF’ function, and cover the basic and advanced parts of this function, including the creations of batter ticks, a triangulation of the design.

The course covers export of your road design model to CAD and the workflow to create plotted Longitudinal and Cross Sections of the design.

What Will You Learn?

  • This course is designed to get you familiar with the Basics of Road Design using the 12d Model program.

Course Content

Topic 1 – Course Summary & Introduction
Topic 1 Summary. The lessons in Topic 1 will explain the design process in 12d Model. How to download and install the 12d Model program, also how to download and install the data set required for the training course. The 12d Model Showcase Project will also be discussed.

  • Lesson 1-0 Introduction to Land Development and Road Design in 12d Model
    02:09
  • Lesson 1-1 Download and Install 12d Model
    01:35
  • Lesson 1-2 Download Course Data and Open Project
    03:01
  • Lesson 1-3 Lets see what is in the Showcase Project
    03:53

Topic 2 – Road Design using the Apply MTF Option
Topic 2 - Road Design using the Apply MTF Option. The lessons in Topic 2 will explain the three key pieces of information required to create a road design in 12d Model. The Apply MTF function will be explained and worked through to set it up to create the road design in 12d Model.

Topic 3 – Data Output and Plotting of the Road Design
Topic 3 - Data Output and Plotting of the Road Design The lessons in Topic 3 will explain the process of exporting the design data to a DWG file. The plotting of the Road Design Longitudinal Section and Cross Sections of the road will also be completed.

Topic 4 – Create more Road Design Models using Apply MTF Option
Topic 4 - Create more Road Design Models using Apply MTF Option The lessons in Topic 4 will explain the use of an Urban template for the design of Road RS2B01. The road will then be designed utilitising an Apply MTF function to create the road design strings and sections.

Topic 5 – Design Kerb Returns at Road Intersections
Topic 5 - Design Kerb Returns at Road Intersections The lessons in Topic 5 will explain the process of creating the Kerb Return Control strings at the intersection of the two roads in CAD. Then import the CAD strings into 12d Model and design the kerb returns vertically to match with the existing design. Then an Apply MTF function will be created which will create the design strings and sections around the Kerb Returns. Finally a design tin of the full road design will be created.

Good second course after 201 - Civil Design Land development. Unfortunately not much discussed about the MTF modifier types.
