About Course

Hydraulic Design of Detention Basins – Essential Techniques

A Course for Water Resource Engineers

  • We have a small land development project.
  • The network of nodes and links has been modelled and Hydraulic Analysis is complete using ILSAX hydrology and 12d’s Dynamic Wave Routing Hydraulic Model.
  • The earthworks design is complete for a simple detention basin.
Our job is to hydraulically model the storage in the basin, and to assess it’s suitability to attenuate the peak discharge from the site.

We assume that you have a good working knowledge of 12d Model, in particular Stormwater Drainage in 12d Model. If you have skills in Hydraulic Design, you will understand the material in this course, but if you need to brush up your 12d Model skills and you want to complete the material ‘hands-on’ then you should consider first spending 46 minutes completing this Fundamentals course: https://www.12dmodeltraining.com.au/courses/301-stormwater-drainage-geometric-fundamentals/

Course Dataset

You can downloaded project that we use in this course from the ‘Resources’ tab at the top of this page.
Extract the files in the zip archive and follow along with the course.
You will require a licensed copy of 12d Model 15 with the ‘Dynamic Drainage’ module.
You will have three months from the date of your enrollment to complete the course.

Course Outline

  • Start with an existing project, where nodes and links have been designed, and analysed
  • Import the earthworks design of the Detantion Basin, and update the Supertin to include the Basin
  • Divert the outflow from the network so that it flows to the Basin
  • Design a network of nodes an links to model the storage in the basin, and the discharge pipe.
  • Perform a hydraulic analysis of the network, incorporating the storage provided by the basin.
  • Assess the flows into and out of the basin, and review the changing depth of water and storage in the basin.

12d Solutions has a defined structure of training modules. The material that we teach you in this on-line course is  included  in course ‘W07 – Dynamic Drainage’. But this course is way more practical and interesting. Extra Dimension Solutions provides face to face training for 12d Model either in person or on-line. The material presented in this on-line course is drawn from the EXDS ‘Stormwater Drainage 3 – Dynamic Analysis’. More information about this and other EXDS courses is available here: https://www.exds.com.au/courses/

Great course - we’ll explained and informative. Looking forward to Part 2, specifically how to model infiltration through the base of the sump.
